 FIDE World Championship            1/11

                                        

 Veselin Topalov became the World Chess 

 Federation (FIDE) world champion in    

 Argentina on 13 October after drawing  

 his game with the title-holder Rustam  

 Kasimjanov in the penultimate round.   

                                        

 Topalov, 30, from Bulgaria, is the     

 first player from his country to hold  

 the title. He is not the undisputed    

 world champion as Vladimir Kramnik of  

 Russia still holds the more traditional

 version of the title.                  

                                        

 The current tournament ends on 14      

 October.
