Tory party leadership contenders
David Davis was bookies' favourite to
replace Michael Howard before his
conference speech, after which many
switched to back David Cameron instead.
Mr Davis, a right-winger who grew up on
a council estate, was thought to be
popular with grassroots Tories.
He was a candidate in 2001 but failed
to get enough support from Tory MPs to
make it to the ballot of party members.
The Haltemprice & Howden MP has been
party chairman and shadowed the Deputy
PM but is now shadow home secretary.
