 MARINE FUEL                            

 The price of marine diesel has tripled 

 during the past 18 months, pushing the 

 average fuel bill to more than £8,000 a

 trip and wiping out any profit from the

 catch. Hardest hit are the diesel -    

 hungry beam trawlers, and Miriam       

 O'Reilly travelled to Newlyn to meet   

 Stephen Knowle, a trawlerman who has   

 been so badly affected by the fuel     

 crisis that he can no longer afford to 

 keep both his trawlers working.        

 He is not alone, W. Stevenson and Sons,

 one of the biggest fleets of Beam      

 trawlers in Europe, has tied up six of 

 its twenty-four trawlers.
