Tory party leadership contenders
It may be third time lucky for former
chancellor Ken Clarke, who is to stand
for the leadership of the Tory Party.
Since becoming MP for Rushcliffe in
1970, Mr Clarke has risen steadily up
the Conservative ladder.
He is one of the few members of John
Major's government still in the Commons
and is popular with the British people.
The 65-year-old has also distanced
himself from the pro-euro views many
blamed for his 1997 and 2001 defeats to
William Hague and to Iain Duncan Smith.
