Home repossessions rise sharply
The number of homes being repossessed
has risen for the first time in seven
years, according to the Council of
Mortgage Lenders (CML).
There were 4,640 homes repossessed
during the first half of 2005 compared
to 3,070 for the previous six months.
Rising repossessions were caused by
five successive interest rate hikes
since late 2003, the CML added.
At the same time, the government said
more homeowners were being taken to
court for mortgage arrears.
