Fewer hospitals reach top grade
The Healthcare Commission said there
was a drop in the number of acute
hospital trusts with three stars in
2004-5 - from 76 to 73.
Difficulties in meeting the targets for
financial management and A&E waiting
times have been blamed.
The commission says a third of hospital
trusts in England are failing to
balance their books.
Its chief executive, Anna Walker, says
financial management is important
because of rising costs in the NHS.
