 REM - Hyde Park, London                

 Two weeks ago, REM were planning their 

 huge Hyde Park gig to be the climax to 

 their mammoth Around The Sun world touq

                                        

 But the bomb attacks in the capital -  

 causing a week's postponement - meant  

 this gathering of 80,000 people was    

 going to mean more.                    

                                        

 The band behind Everybody Hurts and    

 Walk Unafraid seemed suited to a city  

 wounded but defiant.                   

                                        

 Throughout the evening, this context   

 was impossible to escape - although no 

 direct reference to it was made.
