 DRIFT NETS (cont)

 Two years ago the British Government
 acted with anglers and other
 beneficiaries to conserve salmon stocks
 by buying out drift net fishermen off
 the North East coast of England in
 return for compensation of £3.5million.

 It's thought the Irish Government will
 now come under pressure to follow suit,
 though ministers have already stated
 that theyWre not prepared to offer
 similar compensation to their
 fishermen.
