 Ronnie Barker, who has died at the age 

 of 76, once said shopkeeper Arkwright  

 in Open All Hours was the best         

 character he had ever played.          

                                        

 The stuttering Arkwright opened his    

 shop for longer and longer hours to    

 increase his trade, and battled his    

 unrequited love for nurse Gladys       

 Emmanujl, played by Lynda Barron.      

                                        

 Young David Jason added humour with his

 portrayal of delivery boy Granville.
