 RONNIE BARKER: 1929-2005               

                                        

 By the mid-1980s Ronnie Barker's career

 had appeared to peak. The Magnificent  

 Evans was another piece of high quality

 comedy but only six episodes were made.

                                        

 That was followed by Clarence, another 

 short-lived sitcom about a myopic      

 removals man. Barker wrote it and      

 agreed to appear mainly because it was 

 set near his Oxfordshire home.         

                                        

 In 1987 Barker announced his retirement

 after 40 years of work. He was tired   

 and wanted to step well away from TV.
