 RANK PLACES BETS ON GAMBLING CHANGE    

                                        

 Leisure group Rank says five years of  

 investment in its casinos will pay off 

 when UK gambling deregulation begins to

 take effect from next month.           

                                        

 The group's first half revenue rose    

 from £757.7m to £870.5m, but pre-tax   

 profits dipped from £66.9m to £60.2m.  

                                        

 Rank blamed higher costs at its Mecca  

 chain and weaker sportsbook margins at 

 Blue Square. Its Hard Rock Cafe chain  

 saw operating profit up 40% at £16.4m.
