 Tim Long, clerk of the course at       

 Chepstow, outlined the reasons behind  

 today's abandonment.                   

                                        

 He explained: "There are small areas of

 shallow rooting. We walked the course  

 before and couldnWt find any problems, 

 but we will launch an investigation.   

                                        

 "I am so puzzled because we haven't    

 watered a great deal - maybe 3.5-4mm - 

 but we will look into all the factors  

 in great detail. We've never had       

 anything like this before."
