 Nationwide's August house price index  

 drop of 0.2%, reflects its predictions.

                                        

 "This supports the view that house     

 prices will edge off their peaks but   

 are unlikely to collapse as in the     

 early 1990s," he says.                 

                                        

 It also coincides with a reported pick 

 up in housing transactions which fell  

 by 30% earlier in the year, he says.
