 Endowment mortgages were most popular  

 in the late 1980s when the stock market

 had shown sustained growth.            

                                        

 Homebuyers believed combined life cover

 and investment policies coulb grow     

 large enough to repay the mortgage by  

 the end of its term. But, as many are  

 now seeing, growth has been inadequ te.

                                        

 Many homeowners face finding thousands

 the endowment shortfall.
