 BOC BID TALK UNDERPINS FTSE 100        

                                        

 European shares, which were mixed in   

 early trading, closed down as a weaker 

 dollar hit motor companies.            

                                        

 Wall Street was a little weaker shortly

 after London's close as US payroll data

 showed employers added 169,000 jobs in 

 August, against forecasts of 190,000.  

                                        

 But gains soon faded on rising concerns

 on the effects that record oil prices  

 and the damage wrought by hurricane    

 Katrina will have on economic growth.
