 Jarhead (15) US 122 mins               

 ---------------------------------------

 Jarhead is a wonder to look at and     

 expertly performed - Jake Gyllenhaal is

 fascinating throughout.                

                                        

 But it's nonetheless a difficult movie 

 to like.                               

                                        

 Gyllenhaal is well supported by Peter  

 Sarsgaard as his sniper chum and Jamie 

 Foxx, finding a few gracenotes in a    

 badly-written role as a staff sergeant.

                                        

 But Sam Mendes' direction, which       

 strains for Kubrickian cynicism, comes 

 across as youthfully jaded.
