Hungary's Nepszabadsag says a surge in
the number of religious groups in
Hungary may be connected with the rules
governing their funding.
The paper reports that there were 127
churches last year, up from 73 in 2000.
The paper believes this is because of a
rule that means donations of 1% of
income tax to churches are matched
two-and-a-half times over by the state.
But it warns against reforming the
donations regime, saying it would be a
blow to religious freedom.
