GLOUCESTERSHIRE (cont)
Adam's final destination is the
Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean,
one of the earliest and now one of the
last producers of natural earth pigment
in the British Isles. Ochre is believed
to have been mined at Clearwell for
more than 7000 years. The industry
thrived until the 1930s with the
Forest of Dean earning a reputation for
good quality, rich pigments, most
notably shades of red and purple ochre.
Purple ochre is an unusual natural
earth pigment, similar colours are only
available in synthetic forms.
