 Ruth Kelly in profile                  

 Ruth Kelly worked as an economics      

 reporter for the Guardian before       

 becoming deputy editor of the Bank of  

 England's quarterly inflation report.  

                                        

 Once an MP, she dealt with the foot-   

 and-mouth crisis as parliamentary aide 

 to the agriculture minister.           

                                        

 She first became a minister in 2001 and

 three years later was made minister of 

 state for the Cabinet Office.          

                                        

 She combined the role with being deputy

 election and policy co-ordinator and   

 helped draft the third term manifesto.
