 Dementieva beaten in first round   4/4 

 Elena Dementieva was the first big name

 to fall as the Australian Open got     

 under way in Melbourne on Monday.      

                                        

 The Russian, seeded ninth, went down   

 7-5 6-2 to Germany's Julia Schruff, who

 had never previously won a match at the

 year's first Grand Slam.               

                                        

 Schruff was in control throughout and  

 held her nerve despite letting a 5-1   

 lead slip in the first set.            

                                        

 The expected fightback never came from 

 Dementieva and Schruff will face Elena 

 Vesnina or Ting Li next.
