 Confirmed Lib Dem leadership contenders

 Deputy leader and foreign affairs      

 spokesman Sir Menzies Campbell was the 

 first person to enter the race to      

 become the new Liberal Democrat leader.

                                        

 A former Olympic runner and Scottish   

 lawyer, he recently got the all clear  

 after treatment for cancer. Aged 64, he

 is likely to be the oldest candidate.  

                                        

 It is argued he might unite the party  

 in the wake of the leadership crisis.  

                                        

 He is not firmly linked with either    

 the left-leaning "social liberals" or  

 right-leaning "economic liberals".
