 Ruth Kelly in profile                  

 Ruth Kelly became a minister for the   

 first time after the 2001 election as  

 economic secretary to the Treasury.    

                                        

 She replaced Charles Clarke as         

 education secretary during a Cabinet   

 reshuffle following David Blunkett's   

 resignation as home secretary in 2004. 

                                        

 But she was criticised by teaching     

 unions after rejecting advisor Sir Mike

 Tomlinson's proposals to replace GCSEs 

 and A-levels with a new diploma.       

                                        

 She also failed to win support for new 

 reforms among Labour MPs and teachers.
