Saudi Arabia has confirmed that a
desalination plant on its coast has
been closed to prevent damage from an
oil slick moving down the Gulf.
Saudi Arabia's Meteorological and
Environmental Protection Agency said
the plant, at Sanfaniya, was closed as
a precaution for a temporary period.
The plant was one of two - operated by
the Aramco oil company - which supply
2 million of the 600 million gallons of
fresh water Saudi Arabia needs daily.
Earlier, Aramco had denied the closure,
saying no oil had reached the plant.
