Macedonia's President, Kiro Gligorov,
has slammed the European Community for
deciding to recognise his republic only
if it changes its name.
The EC had bowed to the wishes of a
"privileged" member - a reference to
Greece - in a way which threatened the
stability of the Balkans, he said.
Greece has argued that the name
Macedonia implied a territorial claim
on its province of the same name.
Earlier, Macedonian Foreign Minister
Denko Maleski resigned, saying the EC
decision was an insult.
