PONTIFF FORCED TO CUT SHORT HIS MESSAGE
Illness has forced Pope John Paul II
to interrupt his traditional Urbi et
Orbi Christmas message in Rome.
The Chief Vatican spokesman said the
Pope had a slight fever and was taking
routine medication for influenza.
The 75-year-old Pontiff had been due
to deliver his annual greeting in 55
languages after giving his blessing but
only managed two before returning
inside his Vatican apartments.
He returned to the balcony 20 minutes
later to apologise and reassure the
crowd about his health. See 192
