 (Close) Wall Street stocks closed      

 slightly higher in slow trading, as    

 Wall Street prepared for the market's  

 long Christmas holiday.                

                                        

 The Dow Jones industrial average ended 

 up 1.44 points at 5,097.97.            

                                        

 In the broader market, advancing issues

 led declines 13-9 on light volume of   

 292 million shares on the New York     

 Stock Exchange, versus 415 million on
