 PALESTINIANS CELEBRATE IN BETHLEHEM    

 Midnight Mass has been celebrated at   

 the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem

 which is no longer under Israeli rule. 

                                        

 Thousands took to the streets; there   

 were fireworks over Manger Square and  

 there was a parade through the town.   

                                        

 Welcoming PLO chairman Yasser Arafat,  

 Bethlehem's Mayor, Elias Freij, said:  

 "It's Christmas, the city is free, our 

 chairman is here to celebrate with us."

                                        

 The Israelis, who took control of the  

 town in 1967, handed it over to the    

 Palestinians on Thursday as part of the

 self-rule agreement.
