 The dollar was range-bound in extremely

 thin dealings, as the currency markets 

 wind down ahead of Christmas.          

                                        

 At 1600 it was quoted at DM 1.4400 and,

 in terms of sterling, $1.5385, against 

 1.4390 and 1.5385 at yesterday's close.

                                        

 The French franc, meanwhile, was steady

 in response to Mr Juppe's promise to   

 uphold a new 0.5% special income levy.
