 Miami squeezed into the play-offs after

 a nail-biting wait - their place sealed

 only after Denver beat Oakland 31-28.  

                                        

 The Dolphins crushed St Loius 41-22,   

 but needed a favour from Denver        

 quarter-back John Elway, who led his   

 side to a comeback win, before the     

 American Conference slot was secure.   

                                        

 Atlanta also claimed a play-off        

 against Green Bay after holding off San

 Francisco 27-28 - replacement quarter- 

 back Bobby Herbert the hero.           

                                        

 But the 49ers' Jerry Rice also took    

 honours, breaking the NFL's all-time   

 and single season receiving records.
