MARKSMEN CALLED AFTER ZOO CHIMPS ESCAPE
Police marksmen have been called after
two chimpanzees broke loose at
Southport Zoo and attacked visitors.
An 84-year-old woman was injured and
treated in hospital after she fended
off one of the animals as it tried to
steal her handbag. A zoo keeper was
also treated for bites.
The two chimpanzees ran along the
resort's pier, chased by zoo staff and
Merseyside Police officers.
One was cornered in a cafe and shot
dead after it apparently became
vicious. The other was recaptured.
