 LIB DEMS CALL FOR FEWER WOMEN PRISONERS

 More women will spend Christmas in jail

 than ever before, according to the     

 Liberal Democrats.                     

                                        

 Prisons spokesman Alan Beith said      

 Britain's female prison population had 

 reached a historic high of 1,772 after 

 a rise of about a third since 1992.    

                                        

 Mr Beith called for greater use of     

 community sentencing for women because 

 many were being jailed for minor crimes

 such as petty theft and minor fraud.   

                                        

 There had also been a sharp rise in the

 number of women held in remand yet only

 a quarter were jailed, he said.
