 RUSSIAN TROOPS STORM CHECHEN REBEL TOWN

 Russian troops are reported to have    

 taken over Chechnya's second town      

 Gudermes from rebels after more than a 

 week of battles.                       

                                        

 Heavy fighting in the area began on 14 

 December after Chechen separatists     

 moved into Gudermes and surrounded     

 Russian troops based there.            

                                        

 Meanwhile, 50 Chechen rebels have been 

 reported killed in an attack near      

 Vedeno, south of the capital Grozny.   

                                        

 Fighting has also broken out to the    

 west of Grozny after rebels attacked a 

 Russian troop position.
