ISLAMIC PARTY TAKES NARROW EARLY LEAD
Turkey's pro-Islamic Welfare Party is
reported to be leading in early results
in the country's general election.
It has 22.7% of the vote, with Prime
Minister Tansu Ciller's True Path Party
close behind with 20.4% and the main
oppostion Motherland Party on 20.3%.
If the Islamic Welfare Party becomes
the largest party in the new parliament
it is likely to be denied power by a
coalition of pro-Western parties.
The election was brought about by the
collapse of the coalition government
led by Prime Minister Ciller.
