 JOBLESS TOTAL FELL BY 18,000 IN AUGUST 

 Unemployment fell by 18,000 to         

 2,295,400 in August, according to the  

 Central Statistical Office.            

                                        

 The fall came as a surprise as many    

 analysts had expected an increase.     

                                        

 The CSO said the small increase in     

 unemployment announced last month had  

 been revised to a small decrease and as

 a result unemployment has fallen for 24

 months in a row.                       

                                        

 At the same time new employment figures

 show the labour force growing, with    

 16,000 new jobs created in the second  

 quarter of this year. See 135/192
