GOVERNMENT SINKS USK BARRAGE PROJECT
Plans to build a barrage across the
River Usk in south Wales have been
rejected by the Government.
The Welsh Secretary, William Hague,
ruled that the scheme would cause
"irreversible and harmful" effects to
the landscape and to fish.
The £70 million barrage plan had been
put forward by Newport Borough Council
and Gwent County Council to transform
Newport's waterfront and create jobs.
Labour MPs and councillors say the
decision will cost 4,000 new jobs.
