 SHEPHARD WELCOMES UNEMPLOYMENT NEWS    

 Education and Employment Secretary     

 Gillian Shephard has welcomed the fall 

 in the number of people out of work.   

                                        

 Mrs Shephard said that the UK's        

 unemployment rate was nearly two       

 percentage points below the European   

 average and there were more            

 opportunities than ever for the jobless

                                        

 But Labour's spokeswoman Harriet Harman

 said unemployment remained "a major    

 problem throughout the UK".            

                                        

 And John Edmonds from the GMB union    

 said the figures showed the recovery   

 had "just about stopped". See 114
