n1n1 |.% US CONSUMER PRICES
/.%/.%/, /,$ ROSE 0.1% IN MONTH
#######################################
US consumer prices rose by just 0.1% in
August, reinforcing earlier indications
that retail price inflation was being
slowly squeezed out of the US economy.
Prices have risen only modestly in each
of the past three months, bringing the
year-on-year rate of inflation down to
2.8% in July and 2.6% in August.
Falling vegetable prices, airline fares
and a steep drop in petrol prices - the
biggest since early 1991 - helped off-
set dearer clothing, drugs and tobacco.
After excluding food and energy costs,
the "core" CPI rose by 0.2% in August.
