 The French Rugby Union have decided    

 against adopting the recent move to    

 turn the game professional.            

                                        

 French federation president Bernard    

 Lapasset said the decision had been    

 taken after talks with clubs and       

 national captain Philippe Saint-Andre. 

                                        

 "Our goal is to respect traditions and 

 values and to protest the image of     

 rugby union in France and at           

 international level," he said.         

                                        

 They are the second major rugby nation 

 to retain the amateur code, following  

 Argentina's earlier decision.
