 Reports in the press last week implied 

 that another breakthrough had been made

 in the search for a cure for deafness. 

                                        

 In fact, the robot device developed by 

 scientists at Bristol University aims  

 specifically to assist surgeons to     

 perform stapedectomy operations.       

                                        

 The stapes is the smallest bone in the 

 human body and plays a vital role in   

 carrying sound from the eardrum to the 

 middle ear.                            

                                        

 The newly-developed 'intelligent'      

 drill will enable surgeons to carry out

 delicate operations which may be of    

 help in some cases of hearing loss.
